A new mobile phone charger that has the capability of working with any handset has been authorized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). It is expected by the GSMA Industry body of generating redundant chargers of 51,000 tonnes each year. Currently the chargers are used by the people are based on the product; hence they have to change the chargers if they upgrade to the new mobile phone. Nevertheless, the new chargers are more efficient in working and can be live for much longer. The GSMA also appraises that they will lower the annual greenhouse gas emissions by 13.6m tonnes.
The Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau Malcolm Johnson said that, this is most important step in decreasing the environmental impact of mobile charging. He also added that Universal mobile phone charger is a common sense solution to be seen in other areas. The charger consists of micro-USB port at the connecting end that similar to the technology used in the digital cameras. The Universal chargers are not compulsory for all the mobile phone manufacturers but some of them have already agreed with ITU to use it. It is expected that the launch of the Universal charger will come to the market in the first half of 2010.
